The Sheppard and the hired man

In John Chapter ten Jesus lays out two views on ministry. He sets before his disciples two ways to deal with people, that is what ministry is about, people.

11"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.14"I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—

Pastors and ministers cannot afford to act like the hired man, the one who is just collecting a check and cares nothing for the sheep. God calls us to intimately love and care for the flock he has entrusted to us. That is what ministry is. That is what the Gospel is. Ministry is not administration and rubbing elbows with the right people, it is about getting down and getting your hands dirty. Laying down your life for the good of the flock.

God helps us love, help us sheppard.
